Galaxy S21 Ultra vs iPhone 13 Pro Max camera comparison: Which flagship is better?

The competition between Apple and Samsung  has been going on for over a decade. The two brands launch their flagship smartphones each year, and fans around the world are watching which smartphones dominate in terms of design, performance and battery life. Samsung's best camera smartphone of the year is the Galaxy S21 Ultra, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max is Apple's best smartphone ever.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 108 MP main camera, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 10 MP telephoto camera with 10x optical zoom. The iPhone 13 Pro Max features more discreet camera specifications, including a 12 MP main camera with sensor-shifted OIS, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 12 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

On the front of the , the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 40-megapixel camera with autofocus, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 12-megapixel self-portrait camera. I had the opportunity to test both devices to see which one had the better camera under different conditions.

Starting with the main camera, the Galaxy S21 Ultra takes pictures in a little more detail. The wider the dynamic range, the more information you can see  in the sky. The iPhone 13 Pro Max's main camera chooses warm colors. This is useful in certain situations. The noise level in his image is also  slightly lower.

The ultrawide camera on the Galaxy S21 Ultra is superior as well. Its images are sharper throughout the frame and have more details. Dynamic range is wider, too.

Photos taken with the iPhone 13 Pro Max's telephoto camera have slightly less noise, but less detail. Both phones work really well and if you don't look at the photos side by side, there's no real difference between the two.

Of course, the Galaxy S21 Ultra's dedicated 10x optical zoom camera has much higher photo details than the iPhone's 10x digital zoom photo. You can clearly see the difference by looking at the license plate of the car and the leaves on the car.

Both phones allow you to take clearer macro shots using an ultra-wide camera with autofocus. Due to the difference in color, the iPhone generally chooses warm tones, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra prefers cold tones. Macro shots from the iPhone 13 Pro Max have less noise. This may be due to the large opening that allows more light to pass through. In the second macro shot comparison, the iPhone 13 Pro Max captured accurate colors, but lost  details.

Both smartphones allow you to take pictures in portrait orientation using a wide-angle camera and a telephoto camera. However, the iPhone 13 Pro Max had a hard time seeing the subject when using a wide-angle camera. I had to try a few times to get a good portrait. The Galaxy S21 Ultra was much better to use when the main camera was used for portraits.
